“The Friends of the Fort” will sponsor National Train Day, which will be celebrated from 10am to 4pm Saturday, May 13, in the historic Frisco Station on the grounds of the Fort Smith National Historic Site. The celebration will be offered without charge and will feature presentations by members of the Arkansas Boston Mountains Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society, including a program by Tom Duggan detailing the difficulties faced in the construction of the 1903 depot. Guests will be able to tour the Frisco Station and learn of its influence on the city of Fort Smith and visit exhibits throughout the building. Children will be treated to several activities, including an art station and the chance to operate a large-scale model train. The A&M Railroad will offer excursion rides at special Train Day rates from the Frisco Depot to the Arkansas River railroad bridge departing the station at 11am, 1pm, and 3pm. The charge for these rides is $20 for riders 13 years of age and older, and $15 for those between 3 and 12 years of age. Each train ride will last approximately 45 minutes.
