At the September meeting of the Chicago Cubs Fan Club, members stayed positive for another Central Division title. With four weeks left in the season, at the time of this writing, the Cubs remain atop the division with a slight lead over the Milwaukee Brewers and St. Louis Cardinals.
As usual, club president Erwin Hoeft had a few trivia questions and a member or two brought in a special Cub keepsake, like Dale Clegg’s May 6, 2018, Chicago Tribune article, “The Masterpiece,” remembering the day Cub great Kerry Wood, age 20, struck out 20 batters in a 2-0 win over the Houston Astros on May 6, 1998.
Jimmie Chalikis told a few more stories of his time as team batboy in the mid-1940s, including him trading baseballs for hot dogs, handling player equipment and a time when legendary umpire Jocko Conlan fined him.
The club meets again at 11:30 a.m. Oct. 3 at Home Plate Café.
