Faith over fear. That is the motto adopted by life-long Charleston resident Josh Teague as he fights a disease that is causing his kidneys to fail. The disease, IgA Nephropathy (IgAN), aka Berger’s Disease, is not exclusive to the kidneys, but rather the body’s immune response to the release of immunoglobulin which fights infections in the body. In those with IgAN the immunoglobulin “gets stuck” in the kidneys causing them to become inflamed. It is the inflammation that causes blood and the IgA protein to “leak” from the kidneys which are unable to filter the blood properly. As a result, over the years, the kidneys stop functioning causing the need for a kidney transplant.
Josh, a CHS graduate, husband, and father of two was most likely born with IgAN, but like others with the disease, he had no idea until he had lost enough kidney function to cause problems. He was officially diagnosed five years ago and in that short span of time his kidneys have ceased to function at a steady rate. At present, his kidneys are functioning at a mere 14%. It is no small miracle that a match has been found and he will not needed to be placed on dialysis before the transplant! The potential donor is currently completing the process to determine if she will be able to proceed with the transplant. As you can imagine, the medical expenses, travel to and from the hospital in Tulsa, and hotel rooms, etc. are extremely costly. Fortunately, Josh has the support of a large family and many friends. You too can show your support by participating in one or more of the fundraising events planned to help ease the financial burden so Josh and his family can concentrate on his surgery and recovery.
On Saturday, October 20, 2018 the Vesta UMC Women’s Group will be hosting a Taco Salad Dinner and Bingo Event starting at 6:00 pm in the Vesta Methodist Church Dining Hall. Along with Bingo, there will be a silent auction and Tupperware sales. Tickets are $20.00 and must be purchased in advance. There will only be 100 tickets sold so purchase yours soon by calling or texting (479) 461-2893 or (479) 965-6103.
