Mansfield Upsets Charleston Lady Tigers

LAMAR — Mansfield’s girls pulled off the first upset of the 3A-4 District Tournament on Tuesday, coming in as a No. 5 seed and knocking out No. 3 Charleston, 49-36.

Despite an up-and-down season, Mansfield (16-11) punched its ticket into the 3A Region 1 Tournament next week in Elkins and ended a long streak of regional appearances for Charleston (15-12).

"You never know at this time of the year," Mansfield coach Keith Dake said. "Last night, we played Two Rivers and barely won after beating them by 35 points the last time we played them. Then we come in here and have Charleston, who we lost to twice. We just played a lot better tonight."

Kaylie Pyles scored 24 points to pace Mansfield in the upset. Mansfield won the Bill Frye Invitational during the holidays against Paris but then struggled through much of the conference season.

"We had a little slump, like every team, every player has a slump," Mansfield’s Erica McKay said. "But we knew we were capable of playing a lot better and tonight we did it. Going to regionals means everything because we want to go up there and win that first game and go to the state tournament."

Mansfield came out strong from the opening minutes against Charleston, running out to a 9-2 lead. Mansfield led 21-15 at the half and 30-26 after three quarters.

Mansfield then took control to start the fourth with a 7-0 run. McKay hit a 3-pointer and Pyles’ driving bucket made it 37-26. Charleston did not recover as Mansfield took care of the ball and made 12-of-14 free throws to ice it.

"We came out and play with a lot more heart, focus an intensity," Dake said. "That is a huge win for us because our girls had never beaten Charleston and we had to get over a little bit of a mental hump just to believe we could do it."
