Charleston Chamber of Commerce President Cody Sosebee opened up the regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, June 6 at the Gathering Place. He introduced candidate for Mayor Ronnie Roper who was present this month.

It was announced that Zoe Bugs Boutique is interested in holding a Spring Fling- if any business is interested in joining them in staying open late for business one evening, contact Brooke Bell-Whitburn for more info.

Jeff Stubblefield with Charleston Public School, announced that Alumni weekend would be held this coming weekend. Hug Chevrolet and Belle Point Beverages are sponsors for the annual golf tournament held at Little Creek Country Club. Each year they have awarded a $500 scholarship to a local student. He also reminded everyone of the Alumni Luncheon to be held on Sunday, which is sponsored by the Beta Club.

Melissa Moore and Susan Brown were present and reminded everyone of the free breakfast and lunch being served to children this summer at school. Cost for adults is $1 for breakfast and $2 for lunch and is served from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM each weekday. Anyone is welcome to participate, whether you attend school here or not.

It was announced that Stacey Beason, Megan Little, and Carrie Efurd just graduated from yearly the Leadership Franklin County Course.

Deanna Schmalz was present to introduce Tammy Sisson, who is running for the Franklin County Clerk position.

Misty Hawkins was present from the Charleston Public Library to talk about the record-breaking crowds they are having for children’s story time and activities. They have lots of fun and interesting free activities going on all during the summer months. A monthly calendar may be picked up at the library. They recently held a dance party and had 80 children present. Misty also announced The “Great American Read” Community Kick Off Party to be held on June 14th at 6:30 pm at the Charleston Community Center.

Barbara Cumby from the Arkansas Tobacco Control Coalition our of Little Rock was a guest of Ashley Curbow and gave an interesting presentation on the dangers of tobacco in all forms, including vaping and smokeless forms. She talked about the advantages of our community possibly going smoke-free, as neighboring Branch has recently done.

A Thank You was given to Hug Chevrolet for providing our venue each month for the Chamber meetings and for doing so much to support our local business community. President Cody Sosebee also recognized our veterans who were present and listed some of the new businesses which have opened recently in Charleston, such as Custom Auto Detail and Prairie Clipper. He also reminded everyone to stop in Del Sol Mexican Restaurant as they are new Chamber members and had their Chamber Ribbon Cutting last month.

Pastor Jeff Holland led the closing prayer and pledge and also won a $10 gift card to Casey’s Country Store, which was donated by Acorns to Oaks Preschool.
