The Central Arkansas Sugar Bears returned to action on Thursday night, traveling to Beaumont, Texas, to take on the Lamar Cardinals at McDonald Gym.
The Sugar Bears fended off an early upset attempt in the first set, before rolling to their 12th sweep of the season, 26-24, 25-21, 25-16.
Central Arkansas (19-5, 9-2 SLC) took the first four points of the match, but after trading points, Lamar (6-16, 3-8 SLC) rolled off six points in a row to take a 10-7 lead. A 7-2 UCA run, capped by an ace from Bailey Waddington, put Central Arkansas back on top 18-14, but the Cardinals would battle back to tie the set at 20-20.
A pair of LU errors gave UCA a 22-20 lead, and the Sugar Bears forced the set point at 24-22, but Lamar rallied to even the set at 24-24, before a pair of LU errors ended the set.
The Sugar Bears built a five-point lead early in the second set, getting an ace from Ravin Rhodes to take a 9-4 lead before extending the advantage to seven points at 17-10.
LU got four straight points, cutting the Sugar Bear lead to 17-14, but that was as close as the Sugar Bears would let the Cardinals get, as the teams traded points from 19-16 until the end of the set.
UCA refused to let off the gas in the third, opening the set by taking an 8-4 lead and never looking back.
A 5-0 run would blow the set open, as Central Arkansas got back-to-back kills from Kellen Dunn and another one from Rhodes to take a commanding 14-6 lead.
Another Central Arkansas run, this one a 4-0 streak, pushed the lead to 21-9.
The Cardinals fought off five match points, cutting the UCA lead to 24-16, but a kill from Savanah Allen gave the Sugar Bears their third sweep in a row.
On the night, Samantha Anderson collected a match-high 12 kills and Dunn added 11 while hitting .381, as Central Arkansas got 32 assists and eight digs from Waddington. Defensively, Emily Doss turned in 10 digs and Anderson had three blocks.
Central Arkansas wraps up its week on the road at 11 a.m. Saturday, heading to Lake Charles, Louisiana, taking on the McNeese Cowgirls.
