Tigers Headed To The Rock

By Grant Tolley Times Record

After a year’s absence, Charleston is making a return to The Rock.

Ranked No. 1 all year, Charleston (14-0) punched its ticket to the 3A State Championship Game next Saturday at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock with a 46-8 win against Earle in the semifinals. Charleston will play Glen Rose at 6 p.m.

After trailing briefly, 8-6 with just 1:17 to play in the first half, Charleston rolled down the field in a two-minute drill to take a 14-8 lead to the half.

"That drive at the end of the first half was big," Charleston coach Greg Kendrick said. "That’s a situation we work on every Wednesday. "We put 1:20 on the clock and we try to go the length of the field and score. We were ready for it and we executed it well. That kind of took some wind out of them."

Then, Charleston outscored Earle 29-0 in the third quarter.

"We had a good second half," Kendrick said. "We weren’t executing all that well in the first half, but we got it together. We didn’t make any adjustments; we just kept doing what we do and we just executed a lot better."

After a slow start, Charleston quarterback Ty Storey finished 33-of-39 for 312 yards and four touchdowns. Chance Shelby caught 11 passes for 210 yards and three touchdowns.

Earle controlled the ball most of the first quarter and Charleston had trouble getting stops.

With less than two minutes in the half, Earle went for it on fourth-and-short and broke an 84-yard touchdown run to shock the Tigers. After a successful 2-point conversion, Earle led 8-7 with 1:29 left in the half.

Charleston drove down 60 yards and scored on a 21-yard pass from Storey to Shelby.

Charleston scored quickly to start the third quarter on a 54-yard pass from Storey to Shelby that made it 21-8 with 11:16 in the third. Austin Pittman took a short pass and ran in a 10-yard score after a turnover and Charleston went up 28-8 with 8:50 to play.

Shelby then caught a 47-yard scoring pass from Storey with 7:54 to go up 35-8. Finally, Storey ran in a 1-yard TD with 2:48 left in the third and then a 2-point conversion to put the Arkansas Activities Association mercy rule in effect.
