The 5th & 6th grade Young Tigers moved to 4-1 on the season and racked up 216 total yards of offense during a 24-20 victory over Magazine in the pouring rain.
The Rattlers got on the board quickly with an opening kickoff touchdown. The two-point conversion attempt failed, putting them up 6-0. The Young Tigers took over possession of the ball in their own territory and ran time off the clock with a long drive that ended in a touchdown run by Kaden Benge. The two-point conversion attempt by Tanner Jones was good, giving the Young Tigers an 8-6 lead.
During the Rattler’s next possession, the Charleston defense didn’t let up and held them to only four plays, giving the ball back to the Young Tigers. They capitalized on the opportunity with another long drive that also ended in a touchdown by Jones. Quarterback Brayden Ross connected with Connor Roland for the two-point conversion, making the score 16-6.
Magazine answered quickly with a kickoff return that resulted in another Rattler touchdown. This time their two-point conversion was good, closing the gap to 16-14. The Young Tigers regained possession just seconds before the buzzer sounded to end the first half.
The Young Tigers started the second half with possession of the ball but couldn’t sustain the drive and turned the ball over on downs. The Rattlers answered with a drive of their own that ended in a touchdown. The two-point conversion attempt failed, giving them a 20-16 lead with just three minutes to play.
During the Young Tiger’s last possession, the offensive line (Jonathan Williams, Devin Donberger, Shane Turner, Nolan Harrington, Slade Skeets and Jordan Fenner) paved the way for a game winning drive that was capped by a touchdown run by Ross with 56 seconds to go in the game. The two-point conversion by Jones was good, putting the Young Tigers on top with a final score of 24-20.
The Young Tiger Defense was led by Jones with five tackles, Brett Ward with four tackles and Hayden Frederick, Fenner and Ross with three tackles each.
The 5th & 6th Grade Young Tigers will take on the Paris Eagles at Alumni Field on Sat., Oct. 19 at 7:30 p.m. This will be their last regular-season home game.
